Diego Borrello

Diego Borrello is a multifaceted musician who divides his life between conducting and composition. He initially obtained his degrees in piano and orchestral conducting from the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires in 2006, while simultaneously studying composition with J. Viera.

He began his career as a concert pianist, performing at prestigious venues such as Teatro Colon, Radio Nacional Argentina, and Museo Fernandez Blanco. However, he decided to further his musical journey in Europe.

He honed his skills under the guidance of Nicolas Brochot (Evry), Jorge Rotter (Mozarteum de Salzburg), Martin Brauss (Musikhochschule de Hannover), Colin Metters in Berlin, and Philippe Gérard for orchestral conducting.

Keen to continue his activities as a composer, he sought valuable advice from Jean Luc Hervé and Bernard Cavanna in France, Johannes Schollhörn in Köln, and Daniel Capelletti in Brussels.

As the recipient of several international composition competitions (such as the Manuel Valcarcel International Composition Competition in Santander, the Young Composers Competition of CNR Boulogne, and the Juan Carlos Paz Competition), he conducts and premieres his works in collaboration with various ensembles (TM+, The New Baroque Times Voices, Manama, Ictus...).

Since 2013, he has been invited annually as a resident at the Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden. He has also been invited to perform at the Gmunden Baroque Music Festival in Austria and the Berliner Symphonietta in Germany.

Established in Brussels since 2012, where he obtained three Masters degrees in Orchestral Conducting (graduating with honors and being awarded First Prize in the WB Federation), Choral Conducting, and Composition from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, he successfully premiered his first chamber opera, "Le Songe," based on August Strindberg's play, at the Forest Cultural Center (February 2014). In the same year, his symphonic piece "Bruits de Joie" was commissioned and performed by the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Christian Arming. He is also the choir conductor of the professional vocal ensemble, The New Baroque Times Voices, for the 2013/14 season, and the operetta company Les Bavards d'Europe since 2014. That same year marked his first collaboration with Ensemble Ictus/Anne-Theresa De Keersmaeker, conducting "Vortex Temporum" at Wiels in Brussels. He is supported by the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel & ENOA and has collaborated with the Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) and the chorus of the Dutch National Opera in 2017. In 2017, he also served as assistant conductor at the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra (under the musical direction of C. Arming). He is the founder and music director of Choeur Gran Cantoria in Brussels, receiving the Excellence Art and Life Award in 2018. In 2019, he also founded and became the music director of the contemporary vocal ensemble, Ottovocale (performing at concerts and festivals such as Loop, Imep, and Arsonic).

In 2022 (March) and 2023 (January), he conducts the theatrical concert "Le dernier souffle d'Amadeus," featuring Mozart's Requiem, at prestigious venues such as the Brussels Conservatory and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula.

In 2023, he conducts the ensemble Besides in the world premiere of the opera "Le désert" by Stéphane Arcas and Baudouin de Jaer in the Grand Manège in Namur.
